Analysis of two contents pages

The contents cover on the left is from Q magazine and the one of the left is from NME. They are both very similar with their layouts. Q have been very consistent with their font throughout the page but NME have changed it, although only slightly. Both also have a main image, this is usually to highlight the main story and this is what Q have used it for but with NME it for the small story they have put on the contents page. Q have used the image of a band who will probably have quite a big story in the magazine and have also put a small box on the picture, so it easier for the reader to find the page number etc. The main contents of the magazine have been listed down the left hand side and have been split up into features and every month. This is because magazines will have certain things that appear in every issue, so if they have a particular section for this then people who regularly read the magazine will be able to find the monthly things easily. The coloured bar in between sections stands out against the plain background to grab the reader’s attention. The contents page of NME shares many of the same features/colours as the front cover (red, black and white). They use sub headings so the reader can easily find what they are looking for, this is a convention most magazines use.  Page numbers are put next to the articles so they are easier to find, the features on the contents page would appeal to the target audience because they are familiar with it and would be interested in the things included on the page.  In the middle of the page is a small piece of information and a picture which will attract the reader. On the left hand side is a band index advertising all the artists that are featured in that issue and there are page numbers so the reader knows what page they are featured on.
